Enterprise API Governance Models for Scalable Digital Platforms
Main Article Content
Abstract
Enterprise API governance has emerged as a strategy that helps to create secure, scalable, and interoperable digital platforms in modern organizations. With increasing adoption of cloud computing, microservices, Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), the role of APIs has gained significance in helping organizations integrate their applications and services with those of their partners and customers in a distributed digital ecosystem. The aim of this study is to evaluate enterprise API governance frameworks and how they help in the scalable development of digital platforms through standardised policies, lifecycle management, security, interoperability, and performance monitoring. An inductive qualitative research design has been used, with the data sources being peer-reviewed journal articles, industry reports, and organisational cases published before 2023. Effective enterprise API governance enables seamless application integration, accelerated digital service delivery, security and enterprise scalability. There are different governance models such as centralised, federated, decentralised, and hybrid. API governance tools like API gateways, authentication and authorisation, versioning, metadata management, developer portals, and automatic monitoring enhance the consistency, reliability, and governance of APIs on digital platforms. This study also finds some API governance issues like legacy systems, inconsistency in API standards, security issues, fragmented ownership, and low organisational governance maturity. The findings from this research suggest that effective API governance for enterprises depends on balancing innovation and centralisation. With the help of governance practices, organisations will be able to achieve better interoperability, higher reuse of APIs, increased developer productivity, better resilience, and better performance of digital platforms.
