Navigating the privacy landscape: a data-driven perspective

Abstract
In the ever-changing world of privacy, the rules of engagement are always in flux. The old methods of defence are not enough to combat the sophisticated attacks that may cause privacy breaches launched by technologically advanced adversaries, or by those trying to exploit vulnerabilities in emerging technologies– for example, new privacy-breaching methods against AI. At the same time, as complexity increases with the adoption of emerging technologies and with the creation of larger supply chains, privacy compliance becomes even more challenging. The ‘State of Privacy Report 2024’ by ISACA, as analysed in the ‘Privacy in Practice 2024’ document, uncovers a rather concerning revelation that the budgets allocated for privacy are anticipated to reduce in the year 2024.1 A staggering 43% of privacy experts in Europe have expressed concerns over insufficiently funded budgets, while an even larger percentage– 56% anticipates further reductions.
